Toll-free Helpline

Feel like you’re the only one? Affirmations Helpline provides peer counseling, empathy and community resources for the LGBT community at 1-800-398-GAYS.  All Helpline volunteers participate in a comprehensive training on LGBT concerns, including coming out, gender identity, intimate partner violence, suicide prevention, and much more.  See VOLUNTEER to answer the Helpline for someone who needs support.
Offered Tuesday-Saturday from 4:00pm-9:00pm.

The Helpline is accessible to LGBT callers from the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities.

Transgender Helpline
A representative from Transgender Michigan is available to answer trans-specific questions on our Helpline.
Offered every Thursday from 6:30pm-9:00pm.

General Motors Foundation Media Center & Bayard Rustin Library
The Bayard Rustin Library houses over one thousand circulating titles. 

Resource Area
The Resource Area is your one-stop-shop for information on exciting community events, updates on pending legislation that will affect our community and access to LGBT-friendly resources on adoption and parenting, counseling, spirituality and much more.  From personal ads to property rentals, Affirmations’ Resource Area is your source for LGBT classifieds in the metro-Detroit area.  Please review the list of community standards before posting in the Resource Area. 
The Resource Area is open during regular business hours.

Employee Resource Groups

Ford Globe
Meeting for the LGBT employees of Ford.
Meets the third Wednesday of every other month (February, April, June, August, October) from 7:00pm-9:00pm.

GM Plus (People Like Us)

MERGE Network
Networking meeting for members of LGBT employee resource groups.
Meets the first Tuesday of the month from 6:00pm-7:00pm.

At Affirmations
Facilitator Development Training

Trains individuals to facilitate groups at Affirmations.  Cost is $25 for members; $35 for non-members. 

Helpline Training
Trains individuals to provide confidential peer counseling for callers who are LGBT or questioning.  Cost is $25 for members; $35 for non-members.  

For the Community
We do request a $50 honorarium for our trainings.
 

LGBT Adolescent Health Health basics, targeting issues specifically related to the adolescent LGBT community.

Advocacy 101
Training about the legal issues facing the LGBT community.

LGBT 101
Training on the basics of LGBT cultural competency.  Ranges from 1-3 hours.

LGBT Safety in Schools Training on terminology, statistics on violence and harassment, barriers to success and information on Gay/Straight Alliances for LGBT youth.  Ranges from 1-2 hours.

Making your Organization Trans-Friendly
Training on the basics of transgender cultural competency.

Removing the Barriers
The Mautner Project’s training on barriers to accessing healthcare for women who partner with women. Ranges from 2-6 hours.
