Our Board of Directors

Mike Flores - Interim President


Mike is a graduate of University of Detroit Mercy and Oakland University; he has held several positions within the automotive industry in Michigan and the aerospace industry in Rhode Island. After returning to Michigan in 2015, he was reacquainted to Affirmations, and actively supported several events. In 2017, Flores joined the Affirmations' Board of Directors with a particular interest in helping the organization live up to its Vision and Mission, ensure its financial sustainability, and help it succeed through the rapid changes in our community.

Syeda Davidson - Secretary


Syeda "Bina" Davidson is a graduate of the University of Michigan - Dearborn and a cum laude graduate of Thomas M. Cooley Law School. She is an associate attorney with Burgess, Sharp, & Golden, PLLC where she represents individuals in employment law and civil rights matters. Prior to this, she worked as a staff attorney at Lakeshore Legal Aid, where she represented survivors of domestic violence in civil proceedings. There, she assisted with efforts to increase awareness of domestic violence issues that are specific to LGBTQ individuals. Syeda first became involved with Affirmations in 2011, through various fundraisers and advocacy events. In the spring of 2012, she co-authored an article in MIE Journal entitled "Serving LGBTQ Survivors in Rural Communities." In November of 2012, she joined the Affirmations Board of Directors.

Frank Aiello - Member at Large


Frank Aiello is a Professor and the Auxiliary Dean of Planning, Assessment, and Accreditation at Western Michigan University Cooley Law School.

Jodi Allen


A graduate of Michigan State University with an emphasis in economics and history, Jodi Allen is a native Michigander and a current resident of Rochester Hills. Jodi first came to Affirmations in 2011 when she began attending various events and weekly meetings sponsored by the Ferndale facility. As a board member, she is eager to lend her voice and efforts to the chorus of others at Affirmations who are dedicated to ensuring that Affirmations remain an important and prosperous community resource.

Rev. Steven Archer

Rev. Dr. Steven Archer is a minister who has served in Southwest Detroit for the last 20 years. He has served on the Board of Directors of several Neighborhood and Community Organizations. He has been an active advocate for those who has suffered discrimination. He is currently retired from active ministry and devotes his time for Justice concerns in the area.

Karl De Nazareth


A current senior HR business partner and leader at Domino's Pizza LLC., Karl has experience working with a variety of backgrounds, individuals and communities specializing in talent development, process administration, labor compliance and human capital planning. Karl has his degree in Human Resources from Western Michigan University along with his PHR and SPHR from the HRCI organization. Karl has also helped lead his company's efforts around diversity, inclusion and LGBT relations. With an international background and cultural diversity, Karl is a current local of S.E. Michigan and has always been passionate about inclusion, diversity, human psychology and community relations. These elements brought his interest to affirmations as a way to give back and provide support to a center and community that has helped him in his own personal development.

Paula Kirsch


Paula is a graduate of the Wayne State University School of Social Work. She currently splits her time as a psychotherapist between her private practice at Authentic Living Psychotherapy, LLC in Detroit, and Eastwood Clinic in Southfield. She is also an adjunct professor at Wayne State University School of Social Work. Paula first became involved with Affirmations in 2012, as a volunteer on the Event Committee and then went on to become a counseling intern and a Center Partner. Paula is passionate about supporting Affirmations as a home for the LGBT community and our allies.

Eric Martin


Eric Martin is currently a Banking Center Manager at PNC Bank. He is one of founding board members of PNC’s local chapter of their LGBTA Employee Business Resource Group, PNC Proud, serving as Vice President. Through this work, he has been involved in many community events and programs, which have connected him with Affirmations.

Phil Nardone


Phil is a graduate of the University of Michigan with an emphasis in Psychology and Gender Studies. He works as an Account Executive at Commonwealth McCann, where he specializes in account and client management. He joined the Affirmations community in 2014, volunteering at the Welcome and Resource Center before training as an Adult Ally with the Youth Drop-in Center, where he has spent the last three years volunteering.

John Stanaszek


With nearly 40 years experience in Retail Bank Management, John currently serves as Senior Vice President and Regional Manager for Citizens Bank. The span of control includes 16 Branch locations, supported by 95 colleagues and 1.25 billion dollars in assets. During his career, he’s been honored with numerous awards for both sales and community project leadership. The most recent being the Chairman’s Credo Award for community involvement for 2016. Currently, John is a Board Member of the Michigan Dental Association Foundation and serves as chair of the Grant Committee as well as a member of the Executive and Governance Committees. He’s a thirty year resident of Ferndale, Michigan where he resides with his partner of 25 years.

Danielle Woods


Dani is a 15-year veteran of the Detroit Police Department. She’s also the Department LGBTQ Liaison, where she serves as a bridge between the LGBTQ community and the police department.
